2. This is Schubert's penultimate piano sonata, written in September -- about three months before his death. It is one of three that he wrote after the death of Beethoven (March 19, ), whose funeral he attended with Hummel. The passing of this great master was an important event in the life of Schubert, for though mourned the loss of the musician he greatly admired, he also perhaps felt.

4. Walter Klien does a fine job here and this is one of only two complete sets of the Schubert sonatas available (The remaining sonatas are available in the VOX volumes 2 & 3). I prefer Alfred Brendel in this literature, but he has not recorded the complete set.4/5(14).

6. This installment in the Klien Schubert cycle contains four middle-to-late sonatas (D , , and ) plus two early sonatas (D and ). However, not a good idea to stereotype early Schubert. I own other versions of K but had not paid sufficient attention to the E Major sonata, D, which contains a lovely Andante/5(8).

Stream Schubert: Complete Piano Sonatas, out of 5 stars Schubert Complete Piano Sonatas: Walter Klien, Volume 3, CD 2 is apparently identical to Volume 2, CD 1 according to the information my computer provided when I inserted the CDs. Actually, the music is different for these two CDs, with the exception that the last two tracks on /5(6).
